My Favorite Children's Books

My dream home includes a library. I've always wanted a library with a ladder like the one in Beauty & the Beast.
via

I'm on my way to owning enough books to create a library, and in only two short years of life, the Bambinos have amassed a bunch of books too. A lot of them, like Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, and Where the Wild Things Are, are leftovers from when I was little.

A lot of them are ones they've acquired. Of all the ones they've received, I have a few favorites.

The Crown on Your Head. I really like the message in this one: every child has qualities that make you uniquely you.

On The Night You Were Born. I have to admit, the first time I read this one, I teared up. It has a really cool message too: You Are The One And Only Ever You.
I'd never thought of it before, but it's really true and because of that each and every person really is special.

I Love You So.  This one is an exchange between a daughter and mother with the mom explaining what "I love you so much" means.
She explains the almost indescribable feelings of loving a child unconditionally and without boundaries. "I love you as big as a great lion's roar, and as deep as the ocean, I love you much more."

I Believe In You. Again, another cool message: I believe in you no matter what life throws at you.

One thing all these books have in common is they rhyme. Apparently I'm a sucker for rhyming books. And, my mom gave them to the Bambinos; she has a knack for giving them really cool books.

We didn't intentionally set out to only give our children books with uplifting messages and I certainly believe in stories with entertainment value, but these are a few of my very favorites, for now.

What are your favorite books for your kids? Are there any I absolutely need to add to their collection?

Just Call Me Edna Mode

This happened on Saturday.
Remind you of anyone?
Any Incredibles Fans? via
It's an angled bob so it doesn't feel super short, although technically it is.  Remember, I cut a good 8 inches off my hair in November. And now I just cut a few more inches off.
Before
After
I like it so far, but we'll see how I feel on day 3 of no washing and I can't put it in my beloved sock bun.

Linking up!

How was your weekend? Did you make any major changes or do anything fun?

So...Do You Think You'll Get Married?

I've written before, about my love for people sticking their noses in my business about my family planning.

My second favorite question is, "So when do you think you'll get married?"

Well....I didn't know I was psychic who can tell you the date already.

I get it. We have kids. You assume we'll get married.

We're doing things backwards.

Backwards is the new forwards people!

I feel like I handle the question well but really it's nobody's damn business!

I handle it much better than that last sentence, I swear.

If we get married, we want it to be a decision we make for ourselves, because we want to and not because we had kids. I feel like that would be a disservice to our children and to ourselves.

has become my mantra.

I get it, people (especially our families) mean well and they're just plain curious. I've made no secret of the fact that I want to get married someday....but today is not that day.

For the record, I have NEVER tried on a wedding dress, this is clearly photoshopped :)

We've had a lot to adjust to and learn over the last few years: we moved in together a little sooner than we wanted to, not only did we become first time parents, but we became parents to twins, and we're I'm still working some stuff out career-wise. I can't even imagine planning a wedding right now.

And, as my aunt said over Christmas break, "You two are raising them as a family in a loving home, you guys get to do what you want."

And seriously, does being married make us any more of a family than we are right now?

Lindsay Loves: Instant Eye Lift

I have a confession.

I got my makeup done for my birthday party.

I intended only to get my eye makeup done so I showed up at the makeup counter fully ready except my eye shadow and mascara....but the girl at the counter must have felt like she needed to fix some things because suddenly she was adding and changing.

I'm so glad she did because she introduced me to the Trish McEvoy Instant Eye Lift and I am in love! It's pricey but so worth it.

I'm one of those olive-skinned (light olive) people who was blessed with hereditary under eye circles. Add my lack of sleep to that mix and I'm one sexy beast.

The girl at the makeup counter taught me to apply it in a triangle so it helps get rid of raccoon eyes caused by your concealer and also help highlight and contour your face.

This is the only thing she put under my eyes. She actually removed my concealer. I never thought I'd be able to completely hide my under eye circles and bags. I bought it immediately.

I'm still on my first tube, but so far, a little goes a long way and I will be buying more when I run out. In fact, Amazon has it cheaper than the store and I have an Amazon gift card so I might just buy another sooner than later.

Have you tried this stuff? Do you have any other tricks to get rid of your under eye circles?

I was not compensated in any way for this post. I just really love this stuff!

The Facts of Me

When I saw Whitney from I Wore Yoga Pants To Work's link up, I knew I had to participate. I have some odd tendencies I thought it'd be fun to share :)

1) I drink beer from a straw, even if it's in the bottle. And I prefer it in a glass opposed to the can. It's even ok to pour it from the can into the glass, I still think you get rid of the tinny flavor that way.

2) I only like cheap beer: Bud Light, Coors Light or hard cider (Angry Orchard is my fave but will drink others.)

3) I WILL NOT leave the house without makeup....or wearing sweat pants. (Yoga pants are ok.)

4) I hate when people call champagne "Champs" it reminds me of Heather on RHOC and although I like her, she's a bit hoity toity.
I keep it classy 'round here

5) I hate when I walk into the bathroom at work and it smells like poop. I'm always afraid anyone who comes in after me will think I stunk it up.

6) I hate the anticipation of pain but handle actual pain pretty well. I'm planning another tattoo already.

7) I learned to whistle at only 6 months old (no joke, ask my dad) but I'm not great at whistling tunes.  I've asked Boyfriend more than once to teach me how.

8) Once upon a time I had my tongue pierced but I hate watching needles go into someone's skin.

9) I love  watching people fall; I always giggle my ass off. (Ridiculousness anyone?) But, when people do something and are seriously hurt, I can't stand to watch.

10) I can't sleep with socks on, but I get into bed, tear them off and then hurl them towards the laundry basket. I don't like cold feet.

11) I was always the tallest girl in my classes growing up. Now I'm just average (5'6") but sometimes wish I was one of those cute, tiny girls.

12) I met Bill Cosby when I was little. He was flying in to the airport my dad works at so he tipped us off. That was the highlight of my celebrity-meeting until I started working at the radio station.

13) I took dance classes for years. I was supposed to start assisting and eventually teaching, but the teacher I was to assist quit. If everything had worked out, I probably would have majored in dance in college and been in some career involving dance right now.

14) When I was little, we didn't have a TV for two years. Sometimes, parts of me thinks we should get rid of ours.

15) When I was little, I said I wanted twins but one practice baby first. I had no idea I'd actually have twins!

16) One time I caught a fish with just a stick, fishing line and a stick. You better believe I told everyone in my family about it too.

17) I used to help promote nightclubs. It was every bit as fun as you'd think and every bit as annoying too.  I met some amazing international DJs, reality stars and musical acts, but I'm happy I didn't make a career out of it.
DJ Scene (who just one Red Bull's Thre3Style comp in Vegas) and DJ Risk One
18) One time I got my leg cut by a boat propeller and spent 12 hours in two different ERs...on 4th of July. It was hell. But, after a few stitches my leg is good as new, except for a gnarly scar. I tell people I wrestled a cougar.

I'm spent. Coming up with these was kind of hard. Do you have any cool facts about you? Share in the comments!

I've done a somewhat similar If You Really Knew Me post before. Check it out!

What about you? Do you have any odd tendencies?

Questioning My Parenting

We bought the Bambinos a Kindle Fire.

They're only two.

For the first time ever, I'm questioning whether we're doing the right thing by purchasing it for our children. It hasn't even arrived yet.

Just before Christmas, I teased a friend that her 5 year old was spoiled because she received one for Christmas.

I'm such a hypocrite.

Getting them a Kindle goes against everything B and I stand for. We both believe that in some ways, the modern convenience technology brings is ruining our children.

We've had countless conversations about how kids no longer hang out and talk with their friends at the mall, they're constantly on their phones instead. Texting is keeping kids from learning phone etiquette and from writing coherent emails. We don't want our children to fall into the technology trap. We were the parents who decided not to give them any toys with batteries.

On the other hand, Peanut is really good at puzzles after playing Monkey Preschool Lunchbox. He was doing puzzles at 18 months or younger which to me seemed pretty early. Bug has learned his colors in large part to other apps I have on my Kindle whereas before he would only identify red. We worked with them on both of these things, but I think the apps gave them a variety that our toys and books at home didn't.

There are times that I'm not proud to admit we've given Bug my phone or Kindle to watch a TV show to keep him calm and sitting in his chair when we're out to eat or watching Seahawks games. I know it's not realistic to expect a two year old to sit still and not want to walk around the length of a football game but I always question whether or not we're doing the right thing by letting him watch my Kindle.  I don't want him to be one of those children who cannot sit and visit with his family but needs to be entertained instead.

I wonder if we're turning our back on our beliefs just because the Kindle is a nice convenience to have. I didn't even set out to buy them one, the day before their party my dad called and said they'd bought the Bambinos clothes but wanted to get them something else. He asked if we wanted certain toys for them. Before I knew what was happening, I said, "They have enough toys but we've talked about getting them a Kindle so an Amazon gift card would be nice." And that's how it happened.

What do you think? Would you buy your two year old a Kindle?

We're Two!

I fully intended to post the actual birthday portion of the Bambinos birthday on Tuesday, but I worked the Lady Gaga concert on Monday and then I was hit by the same bug everyone else seems to have. These last two nights I went to bed around 8pm! Last night I fell asleep on the couch watching DVR'd Catfish. (Anyone else watch that? No? I'm the only one completely out of their demographic who watches shows on MTV still. Well good.)

Anyway. This year's birthday party was so much fun. Last year they were cute, but this year they were running all over, playing with the other kids. Peanut was doing his happy shimmy, it was just so much fun to sit and watch them. Although I didn't really get to sit....

My friend Erica showed up a little early so she could help me set up and brought her two girls, T & K with her. They were so excited for the bambinos to show up that K yelled, "Surprise!" causing Bug to do a dead stop in the doorway. For a while after, Bug was uninterested in playing with the other kids, choosing instead to hang out with the adults, namely Daddy.
Little K wanted a hug from them so bad. She pretty much chased them around the whole time. Peanut loved it.
Bug chose to sit on the sidelines eating crackers...
 or cuddling with Daddy.

Peanut kept running out into the foyer squeeling with joy as the other kids followed him.

K has not given up on getting a hug. Too bad Bug's not really a hugger, unless it's me or Daddy.

Finally, after they'd been eyeing presents for awhile, we let them open them.

This was the very first present they opened (a wooden logging truck) and Bug took off with it. He was completely uninterested in his other presents, it's like he said, "Well that was fun, I've got what I want. See ya."
So Peanut opened most of the other presents.

Peanut is so funny with wrapping paper. He will tear a piece off and throw it over the edge of the chair or behind him, or anywhere else it's out of the way. But he does it one piece at a time. He did this at Christmas and their birthday too which makes opening presents a slow process.

I finally convinced Bug to give up the truck and help.

Some friends gave them recordable microphones, but I think Boyfriend has played with them more than they have.

After being completely spoiled by our friends and family, we sang Happy Birthday and cut the cake my sister made. It was a yummy white cake with berries and a cream filling between the two layers.

Most of the kids weren't terribly interested in cake so they ran around some more while the adults ate.
But Peanut did end up shoving a whole Oreo or Brownie ball in his mouth....twice. I had to chase after him to wipe his drool off his cute Bubble Guppies shirt.

Be still my heart. My Bambinos are getting so big. It's not secret that Bug is a Daddy's boy so when B went to roll the tables we used back into the church's gym, Bug kept lookout until he got back. He totally could have looked out the window without ducking down, but he didn't and that action alone made me realize just how grown up they are.

Is it bad that I've already started thinking of ideas for their 3rd birthday? Although next year we ware not getting the room at the church again. At just after 5pm when we were almost but not quite finished cleaning up, some people barged into the room to watch football even though we'd paid for the room until 6pm. And, with such a large room, the guest list gets too out of control and it's hard to actually visit with people.

It's Time to Party....Swim On In

The Bambinos had a spectacular Bubble Guppies bash on Saturday.

Those boys are so spoiled loved :)

I did so much better this year and started things more than a week out so I was happy with the way everything turned out and I didn't kill myself doing it this time either. I went to bed at 12:30am on Friday and got up at 5am, that's much better than my two hours of sleep last year :)

Everyone was greeted by the Bubble Guppies door poster.

Just like last year, I had a drink/food table on one side, and dessert table on the other.

I used pictures from last year's party for the Jones Soda.
I had a million ideas for food, but ran out of time so I went with a veggie tray in a clamshell-shaped tray, a cheese and cracker plate and goldfish crackers of course.

The dessert table is always my favorite to put together.
My sister's saint of a boyfriend blew up each of those balloons himself.....but I don't think he felt like he could say "No,"....I'm his boss.

I had a really cute banner planned but ran out of time. It was still fun seeing their progression from 12-24 months though.
I was kind of going for a blue and green theme with little pops of orange. And pretty much everything was bubble shaped.
The brownie bubbles and Oreo bubbles were pretty easy to make. If anyone's interested, I can dedicate a post to directions. I will say, they're so much easier than last year's cake pops but I still have a hard time getting the chocolate smooth.
I wish this photo was sharper, but it's basically Madeline cookies with frosting and gumballs/sixlets. And of course they have two pearls.

Chex Muddie Buddies "Puppy Chow".
Cornflake Cookie "Fish Flakes"

Thanks to pinterest, I dip dyed the cupcake wrappers. Next time, I wouldn't bake cupackes in them because you lose the effect. I would put some kind of dessert in them, maybe the fish flakes or the brownie bubbles.

One of my favorite treats was dog bone shaped cookies. I used the same recipe as last year's cookies but I chose not to frost them; I felt like there were enough sweets.

I realized as I was looking at my Bubble Guppies Pinterest board that I completely forgot to make one desert (the marshmallows) but we have enough left over sweets so I guess it all worked out.

Centerpieces always give me the biggest challenge. I never know what to do that's not terribly expensive or going to block everyone's view of the other people at their table. I found different bowls/vases at Walmart along with the grass, sand and shells. The characters I printed and we cut out ourselves. I'm pretty happy with how everything came out.

Overall, I LOVED putting together this party [anyone need me to design invites for them? I wouldn't charge much:)]  and I'm so much happier with the result than I was last year, but I have to admit, a lot of my inspiration came from Pinterest (see my Bubble Guppies board.)

I'll get to the actual party tomorrow. The Bambinos deserve a post of their own :)
