Lindsay Loves: Fitness Trackers

This is it. Today I start hardcore good eating. I'm sure some of the stuff I eat will not be considered clean, but it will be much healthier than I had been eating. I'm determined to like cooked vegetables if it kills me.

I posted on both twitter and facebook asking if anyone has a heart rate monitor/calorie burner thing they like. Both the fitbit and BodyMedia  were suggested.

I packed up the Bambinos and headed to Best But where I proceeded to talk to the sales guy about both devices until my sister's eyes were rolling to the back of her head. I finally decided on the fitbit because the guy said his manager has it and loves it.
via
It's easy to use, syncs wirelessly with your computer, is compatible with MyFitnessPal, and the website is easy to use also.

My concern was, since it doesn't actually need to touch your skin, how would it tell me how many calories I've burned doing the Shred? If you use it at work like I do, I'd have to wait until I got home to sync it so I couldn't really check my progress throughout the day. and because it talks to MyFitnessPal, MyFitnessPal adjusts the amount of calories I should eat based on what the fitbit tells it. I think sometimes it was counting my steps during the Shred, but it wasn't giving me credit for enough calories burned so I never knew how much exercise I should add into FitnessPal

After wearing it for a few days, I decided to take it back because it's more of a daily fitness tracker telling you how many steps you've taken and the number of floors you've climbed. It decides on the number of calories you've burned based on your weight and some other parameters you enter upon setting up your device. It's a helpful little tool if you're not super concerned with your activity level, but it just wasn't right for me.

I got the BodyMedia Advantage Link and I am IN LOVE.
via
Since you wear this one, it uses sensors to measure different things creating much more accurate readings.
via

These are my actual results, so far, today.
Setting up the device was a bit confusing at first, but then when I figured it out, I felt really stupid for not realizing what I needed to do in the first place.

The device I got links wirelessly to your phone through bluetooth so I can still track my progress throughout the day. I've found that their online food log is lacking quite a bit of food but I just google the nutrition info or use MyFitnessPal to figure it out then create a new food in BodyMedia if it's something I'll be eating a lot of.

I haven't actually worked out since getting it last week, but I have a feeling I'm going to be thrilled with my readouts after I treadmill today.

I love that it tracks your sleep, I go to bed at decent times but suffer from vivid, bad dreams so I never feel well rested. I found out that last night my sleep was only 78% efficient. I also love that the device gives you tips and tricks. It told me that my food yesterday was 38% fat (I only logged popcorn) so I should try eating more lean protein, fruits and veggies. I love that it will help me figure out what foods I should be eating to make better choices.

The BodyMedia band was about $100 more than the fitbit, but because of everything it does, I think it was worth my money.

Greek Yogurt Twice Baked Potatoes

Did you know you can substitute Greek yogurt for sour cream in recipes? It's true and it made me oh so happy to learn that.

B and I have not been eating clean. I did really well for one day and then quit. It takes a little more planning than I've had time for this week,  I am determined to start again on Monday. We have been eating a lot more fruits and veggies and have given up white flour and processed foods so I guess we're taking baby steps to clean eating.

On Tuesday, I thought I'd try making twice baked potatoes but I was curious to see if we could substitute greek yogurt for sour cream so I googled it. Here's the recipe I used and modified so it didn't have bacon.

And I screwed it up royally.

Apparently I didn't put the four whole potatoes I started with far enough into the center of the oven so after an hour, they still weren't done cooking. I put them back in and maybe I overcooked them because the skin was sticking to the flesh and I ended up peeling the skin off all but this one potato. (Remember, I started with four whole ones.) Making these potatoes proved to Boyfriend just how little I know about cooking.

They ended up being really good and just a little sweet, but I'm still disappointed that we had to eat them way after we were finished with the rest of our food and we only ended up with one good potato. We ate so late the Bambinos didn't even get any.

I cut everything by about 1/2 to a 1/3 since I ended up with so much less than I intended. I kind of just eyeballed it.

  • 4 large baking potatoes
  • 1 cup Greek Yogurt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese, divided

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. Bake potatoes in preheated oven for 1 hour.
  3. When potatoes are done allow them to cool for 10 minutes. Slice potatoes in half lengthwise and scoop the flesh into a large bowl; save skins. To the potato flesh add Greek Yogurt, milk, butter, salt, pepper, 1/2 cup cheese. Mix with a hand mixer until well blended and creamy. Spoon the mixture into the potato skins. Top each with remaining cheese.
  4. Bake for another 15 minutes.
I love knowing I can add Greek Yogurt to things because I know it's so healthy for you but I still don't love it unless it's mixed with stuff.

They Made Me a Mama

I don't think I mentioned it last week but we took family pictures and we got the proofs on Monday! I'm absolutely in love with them. I'm going to try and keep it short and just share a few of my faves. There's more on the facebook page.

Our photographer, Barbie Hull, was worth every single penny we paid her. She is friendly, fun, and obviously takes great pictures. I love that she got a mix of traditional posed photos, untraditional posed and also candids. She was patient and worked so well with our Bambinos. I can't wait for her to take our next photos.

If you're in the Seattle area, I highly recommend her for your wedding, engagement and family photos.

Baseball & New Babies Oh My!

I need a weekend from my weekend. Friday night, Boyfriend and I went to a Mariners game with my parents (thanks to work for the free tickets!)
We saw the Dave Niehaus statue for the first time. It's still kind of crazy to me that after 33 years, he's not announcing our baseball games anymore.
Our M's lost 7-3 against the White Sox, but it was still fun going anyway. Hisashi Iwakuma made his Major Leagur debut (pitching) so it was kind of cool to think that we were a part of such a major moment in his life.

Saturday we met up with two of my cousins and a new second cousin! We met them up at Zeke's Pizza in West Seattle and introduced the Bambinos to new baby S

I'm not sure if it was the fact that Kyle is such a happy guy (they're leery around super happy, boisterous people) or that Baby S was fussing, but Peanut freaked out.
Being the good mom that I am, I took a quick pic before comforting him.
He was back to normal in no time and both Bambinos were very interested in why I was holding Baby S.
It was a warm day, I kept letting the Bambinos drink out of a straw (too many Instagram pics about that!) so Peanut completely peed through his pants (front and back, and down to his knees almost) and for the 2nd time in just over a week, I didn't have spare pants for him.

The poor kid is going to look back on the family pic in 20 years and wonder why he's half naked.
This was followed up with some shopping (more about that later) and some BBQing the next day. I'm loving that Seattle has been nice on the weekends and rainy during the week. If it has to rain, it's picking a right time to do it!

PS
Does anyone else hate the new Blogger interface? It seems so technical and cold. Not the old, warm fuzzy blogger I'm used to.

My Doppelganger

Since I forgot yesterday was Tuesday, I forgot yesterday was Raven's Doppelganger link-up. Lucky for this scattered Mama, Raven's leaving the link-up open for a few more days so I still have a chance to participate!

Excuse me!?! Martha Stewart?!? She is a Domestic Goddess which I strive to be one day, BUT, in no way do I want to look like her. I guess it's too late. I don't think I look like Danny Glover at all, but Rebecca Romjin I'll take. I once heard that Denzel Washington's face is almost a perfect mirror image and mine is not at all, so I know I don't look like him.

My matches from when I had fat-pregnant-face were better than the first ones. At least these are all women...but there's that Martha again.

No words.

For real though, I don't really get told I look like anyone anymore but I used to get Alanis Morissette all the time in Jr. High.

Not this Alanis
This Alanis.

I used to get so upset because  I did not find her attractive at. all. and every time I said so, people would say, "No, she's beautiful..... I think it's the long hair." I took it to be their nice way of telling me I had a long face and big mouth.

If the shoe fits.

There's still time! Go link up with Raven!

Eat Clean Train Dirty

The amount of crap in our food scares me. For months now, I've been trying to figure out how to incorporate more fresh fruit and vegetables in my diet. Once I started working out, I've been doing a pretty good job at it, but I knew there was more I needed to do. I've lost weight since I started working out but all too often, we'd make a dinner of frozen pizza, bar food from Doofers or some other less than stellar food.

I've been toying around with the idea of eating clean for awhile because I know that the amount of toxins, that we now put in our bodies has grown exponentially compared to our food 50 years ago. I became completely convinced after I saw a photo of a high school classmate on facebook. She only started eating clean two months ago and her body has really changed. She was never big or overweight before, but now she's smokin'. That sealed the deal for me.

I've been eating ok, but I've lost the same two pounds probably 10 times (no joke.) I do so well during the week but then fall of the healthy train during the weekend causing me to start losing the two pounds on Monday that I had lost the week before. Sugar is my nemesis.

I thought convincing B would be a challenge but he was surprisingly on board with it - for a month.  I'm hoping he'll feel so good that he'll agree to make this our lifestyle. He's totally willing to eat more fruit and veggies, but he's not convinced we need organic meat, I'm hoping my plan works and he feels a difference.

My biggest fear is that I'm too picky. I have major texture issues with food, but I'm hoping I get over it.

So here I am, week one of eating clean. I can't believe I'm posting this so please be nice. I'm only doing this to keep myself accountable, and I'll post more pictures at the end of our month "trial period."
I've been reading a bunch about what foods I can and cannot eat, but I'm debating on picking up Tosca Reno's cookbook. Has anyone tried it? Is it worth purchasing? Do you have favorite clean recipes to share?

It's Not the Kentucky Derby But....

Opening Day of the Horse Races is something that I look forward to every year. I don't even understand the betting structure so I never bet and barely pay attention to the actual races, but we only go to Emerald Downs once a year, so I look forward to it every year. Last year, we took this Bambinos with us and this was no exception.

There's just something so cute about babies eating, isn't there?
I ran into an old friend from High School, but I also ran into my ex best friend. It was one of the most awkward situations I've ever been in. The last time I had talked to my ex bff, I had just found out I was pregnant, but I couldn't share the news with him because he had talked nonstop about how he was going to get married. I never heard from him again so it was like, "Hi, how are you? Meet my 15 month olds." I know he goes to the races all the time so I prepared myself for the possibility I would run into him especially since I know Jon still hangs out with him, but I didn't think he'd have the balls to come say "Hi," with Jon. I hope to not have to go through this every year on opening day.

The Bambinos were doing so well sitting in the stroller, but I decided to let them out and maybe work out some energy. Peanut loved being able to walk around and show off his skills.

Lovebug was perfectly content on a blanket.
Lovebug loved being able to watch the people and see the horses, I love giving them opportunities to people watch.
The best thing about this year is we're not the only ones with kids anymore! Our friends Brian and Melissa welcomed their baby about 4 weeks early so we got to meet her at the races. Like Melissa said while we were leaving, "Who would have thought a few years ago that we'd have seen this sight?"

It is kinda crazy to see the two dads pushing the strollers.

Doesn't Have To Match, Just Go

We're loooong overdue for the family pictures we're taking tomorrow. I intended to do them around 12 months and now they're 15 months old! I planned these ones out better than the last ones we took (which I never shared with you for some reason) and I'm actually kind of happy with our outfits.
As always, the one outfit I'm not thrilled with is mine. That blue sweater is not the greatest representation,  I couldn't find the exact sweater on Target's website so I photoshopped a similar one to make it closer in color.  It's not super matchy matchy, but it's coordinating. Stacey London says, "It doesn't have to match, it just has to go." Hopefully it all works out the way it does in my head.

I've read that you should layer  pieces to add more interest and of course none of us have layers. What I want to wear is the cardigan from this outfit
via

Yes, at 29 years old, I actually went out and bought an Abercrombie cardigan, but you know what? I love the way it fits. It's just too bad the stripes would clash too much with the plaid in the Bambinos' shirts. Plus, I've also read that red is not a good color for photos because it competes too much for your eye to go to the red item rather than people's faces.

Now,  I'm debating about if I should pull part of my hair up or leave it down. I'm in one of those weird in between stages with my bangs so I don't  really want to leave it down, but I'm afraid I'll hate the pics if they're pulled up.

Any tips for good family photos for me?

Maybe Baby

I've been going through the Bambinos' clothes the last few days to give them to my cousin who finally welcomed her baby boy in February.  I already rounded up two boxes and a garbage bag full to give to her when I came across three tubs of clothes a co-worker had given us when the boys were first born that I had never even gone thorough. I came across this gem

A Seahawks onesie! And look at the back!
I die. I was upset we didn't know we had it because B specifically went out and bought the boys Seahawks stuff last season. I stormed out to the garage to show Boyfriend to which he said, "Are you serious? Keep the really good stuff...." My eyes popped open and I asked if he was really telling me to keep something.

I was amazed because I've mentioned before, our house is really small and he likes to donate things to Goodwill. He tried to backtrack and say, "No, I meant set aside the good stuff to give as gifts." We are not giving used stuff away as gifts and he knows it.

 He is not that tacky.

Could B actually be coming around to the idea of another child someday?

I want to enjoy the two I have right now but I absolutely want more children eventually. I would love to experience a singleton pregnancy and see if I can enjoy being cute and pregnant instead of swollen and huge. I would love to be able to figure out which body part is moving rather than just know which baby it is. I would love to not have to worry that one baby is taking all the nutrients and the other one is not growing like it should. I would love to give the Bambinos a baby brother or sister.

And if I'm one of those rare women that always drops two eggs, that's okay too.

That's part of the reason our kids will be more spaced out than most people would like - I need to account for the fact that I could possibly have a 3rd and 4th child at the same time. And I need to make sure I'm ready, that we're ready.

Maybe B's considered it more than I thought?

Early Easter

Can I just start out this post by saying today my Bambinos are 15 months old. How did that happen?! Okay, back to Easter....

Friday night, we took the Bambinos to see the Easter Bunny. Easter kind of snuck up on me and it wasn't until Thursday night that I realized we didn't have much time for the photo. Although I'm never impressed with the quality of the photo from our local mall, I always purchase the CD which is a bit better.

I anticipated that the boys would cry their heads off, but Lovebug stayed calm, but leery. Peanut, on the other hand, kept pointing at the Bunny's mouth. I thought it might be cute to purchase one of those photos but we weren't given the option.

Saturday, we had to have Easter because B had softball games all day on actual Easter (don't even get me started on that one.) We had B's mom and her boyfriend, and my mom over. But first, B ran up to his friend's car show real quick and I took the Bambinos outside to play.

They'd never actually played in the grass before as last year they were too young and we didn't have a great summer. Peanut wanted to walk so bad but our backyard is really uneven so the poor thing kept falling on his butt.

Lovebug was cute touching the grass, trying to figure out if he liked it or not.
He's literally petting the grass
I was taking a cute series of pictures where Peanut was doing a little wiggle when we got photobombed.

When my mom came over, she brought the Bambinos a new car! Peanut isn't too interested yet, but Lovebug loves it. He loves cars. He was really hamming it up waving to all of us out the window. He's prefectly content not even going anywhere in it, but just playing with the steering wheel and trying to push the horn hard enough to make sound.

We made spaghetti for dinner as everyone in B's family (except him) are vegetarians. We thought it would be easy to make one sauce with meat and one without.

This picture cracks me up. Bug didn't realize he could eat the Angel Food Cake, he just kept squishing it.

Sunday morning the Bambinos woke up to find the Easter Bunny had come.
The Easter Bunny even made them personalized baskets using the pails I'd gotten at Target for a dollar months ago. I knew they'd come in handy someday.

How was your Easter? Did you follow traditions or have off the wall food like we did?
