How I Learned To Do Makeup From Drag Queens

It's true....drag queens can teach you a thing or two.

I've blogged about watching Seattle's Drag show, but what I never mentioned is during my first days of motherhood, I got sucked into Ru Paul's Drag Race.

When you're up at 3am, you'll watch almost anything mildly entertaining

I noticed that drag queens' exaggerated makeup really demonstrated how to contour your face. I was shocked to see how the Michael Jackson impersonator looked up close when he walked off the stage at Le Faux, it was all makeup! Even the dimples were drawn on!

Do you see how parts of his face are almost white, and other parts are brown? The white parts are what should be highlighted and the brown are the parts you would want to shadow. Amazingly, this guy looks nothing like Michael Jackson in real life.

Here's a better picture. It's been floating around pinterest  and although this teaches you where to contour, it was the drag queens that taught me how transforming contouring can be.

And now you think I'm a total nut job.

  1. I seriously need to learn more about makeup. I only know the basics and do the same thing every day. I'm sure there are all kinds of tutorials online, and I should really hunt them down . . . this contouring thing is interesting!
