Lindsay Loves: Fitness Trackers

This is it. Today I start hardcore good eating. I'm sure some of the stuff I eat will not be considered clean, but it will be much healthier than I had been eating. I'm determined to like cooked vegetables if it kills me.

I posted on both twitter and facebook asking if anyone has a heart rate monitor/calorie burner thing they like. Both the fitbit and BodyMedia  were suggested.

I packed up the Bambinos and headed to Best But where I proceeded to talk to the sales guy about both devices until my sister's eyes were rolling to the back of her head. I finally decided on the fitbit because the guy said his manager has it and loves it.
It's easy to use, syncs wirelessly with your computer, is compatible with MyFitnessPal, and the website is easy to use also.

My concern was, since it doesn't actually need to touch your skin, how would it tell me how many calories I've burned doing the Shred? If you use it at work like I do, I'd have to wait until I got home to sync it so I couldn't really check my progress throughout the day. and because it talks to MyFitnessPal, MyFitnessPal adjusts the amount of calories I should eat based on what the fitbit tells it. I think sometimes it was counting my steps during the Shred, but it wasn't giving me credit for enough calories burned so I never knew how much exercise I should add into FitnessPal

After wearing it for a few days, I decided to take it back because it's more of a daily fitness tracker telling you how many steps you've taken and the number of floors you've climbed. It decides on the number of calories you've burned based on your weight and some other parameters you enter upon setting up your device. It's a helpful little tool if you're not super concerned with your activity level, but it just wasn't right for me.

I got the BodyMedia Advantage Link and I am IN LOVE.
Since you wear this one, it uses sensors to measure different things creating much more accurate readings.
These are my actual results, so far, today.
Setting up the device was a bit confusing at first, but then when I figured it out, I felt really stupid for not realizing what I needed to do in the first place.

The device I got links wirelessly to your phone through bluetooth so I can still track my progress throughout the day. I've found that their online food log is lacking quite a bit of food but I just google the nutrition info or use MyFitnessPal to figure it out then create a new food in BodyMedia if it's something I'll be eating a lot of.

I haven't actually worked out since getting it last week, but I have a feeling I'm going to be thrilled with my readouts after I treadmill today.

I love that it tracks your sleep, I go to bed at decent times but suffer from vivid, bad dreams so I never feel well rested. I found out that last night my sleep was only 78% efficient. I also love that the device gives you tips and tricks. It told me that my food yesterday was 38% fat (I only logged popcorn) so I should try eating more lean protein, fruits and veggies. I love that it will help me figure out what foods I should be eating to make better choices.

The BodyMedia band was about $100 more than the fitbit, but because of everything it does, I think it was worth my money.


  1. Wow, that sounds totally amazing. I'm sure it will be helpful! I looked it up cause I want it, too . . . but I don't think I can afford it right now, ha. I'm glad to hear about your experience with it though, and will definitely think about it in the future! For now, I need to start by getting back on My Fitness Pal, geeeeez . . .

  2. I love that you are doing this! I will do it with you! I SO need to start eating better. I can't keep eating my kids leftover chicken nuggets and fish sticks. Summer is going to be here sooner than later and you are totally motivating me!!
